UGM and UI Faculty of Law Held the 2nd CILS International Conference
Universitas Gadjah Mada’s Faculty of Law in collaboration with the Center for International Law Studies (CILS) Faculty of Law, University of Indonesia, held an international conference of The 2nd CILS International Conference with the theme ASEAN's Role in Sustainable Development from November 21 to 22.
Committee chairman of the Conference, Dr. Sigit Riyanto, S.H, LL.M., said this conference discusses ASEAN important issues. It is attended by various international legal experts from ASEAN, Asia, Australia, America and Europe. He added that some issues in this international conference are the progress development of ASEAN international law that currently has become a joint agreement of member countries since the signing of ASEAN Charter in 2007. “ASEAN has undergone a transformation. As an international organization, ASEAN has become more complete with the existence of its international legal aspect. Moreover, the ASEAN Charter became the roadmap in the upcoming development of the ASEAN," said Sigit to the reporters when met at the sidelines of the conference at Faculty of Law, Monday (21/11).
According to Sigit, the Jakarta Charter is not only a legal requirement and referrals for international agreements of ASEAN member countries to have contact with countries outside ASEAN. But it can also be a legal framework in the field of economy and security in line with the interests of ASEAN member countries. "Standards that are established and agreed on have multilateral nature to become legal standard that must be adhered to and properly implemented by member countries," he said.
Sigit conveys, in this conference, three major issues discussed by members of the international legal experts are, the first is ASEAN security stability in the field of environment and ecology. Second, ASEAN economic integration through global trade liberalization needs to be integrated in the form of economic law. Third, the role of ASEAN as an organization for socio-cultural forum in the realization of ASEAN Community.
The conference which lasted for two days presents international environmental law expert from the National University of Singapore, Prof. Koh Kheng Lian, legal expert from Nagoya Keizai University Japan, Prof. Takashi Miyazaki, and economic law expert from University of Indonesia, Prof. Erman Rajagukguk. While on the second day a panel discussion on cooperation development in the fields of politics and defense, economy, social, culture and legal was held.
