Faculty of Engineering Universitas Gadjah Mada has received 4 motor engines from PT Yamaha Indonesia Motor Manufacturing (YIMM). Simbolically, the motor was presented by Henry Gani, Vice  President YIMM, to Mechanical and Industrial Engineering Department UGM represented by Dr. Subagyo,  Secretary of the Department on Thursday (3/3) at KPTU FT UGM. YIMM also gave a donation in motor engines and injection to a number of vocational schools in Central Java and Yogyakarta.

Prof. Ir. Panut Mulyono, M.Eng., D.Eng., Deputy Dean for Administration, Finance and Human Resource in his speech expressed gratitude to YIMM for their assistance. The aid will be used optimally to support learning process in the Faculty.

Henry Gani, Vice President YIMM, said that the aid was a form of care of YIMM to Indonesian education. Although nominally it was not much, it was expected to support the need for tools especially in engineering.

The aid given will be used for the energy efficient car SEMAR. SEMAR is an automitve product created by several students in Mechanic and Industrial Engineering, SEMART team, which was officially launched by the Rector of UGM on 17 March 2010. SEMAR participated in the Shell Eco Marathon 2010 competition and reached the 10 best design autodesk inventor award 2010. This year SEMAR will participate again in Shell Eco Marathon 2011 competition in Sepang Circuit, Malaysia, 6-9 July.

Semar Car

Dr. Jayan Sentanuhady, S.T., M.Eng., the mentor for SEMART team said that  in the Shell Eco Marathon 2011the SEMART team would launch two cars at once, Semar Prototype and Semar Urban. They are targetting at having fuel efficiency at the maximum distance. "The car has been designed to have thermal efficiency and volumetric at the maximum in certain balance point. This engine has the long stroke specification with high torque characteristics at low cyclic engine to suppress use of fuel," said the lecturer of Mechanical and Industrial department.

Semar Prototype is  a energy saving motor vehicle that can reach 280 km in distance using 1 lt of gasoline. It is 2.8 m in length, 0.65 in height, 1m in width, and wheel base 1.6 m. The body which is 2mm thick is made from fiberglass. It uses 4 tracks of single cylinder on 25cc capacity. It has maximum speed of 45 km/hour.

Jayan said further that the SEMAR urban was now having some finishing touch. It is designed as a city car that is energy efficient and low in emission. Engine uses 125 cc 4 tracks with octane-95 fuel. It is also equipped with double spark plugs that ignite sequentially, controlled by Electronic Control Unit. SEMAR urban is 2.3m in length, 1.3 in height and 1.3m in width.

Approaching the competition, Jayan said that they had made some changes to the Semar Prototype. Engine capacity has been changed from 25 cc to 115 cc so that it can be stronger when going through high and long roads. The design has also been made modular with separate back arm, seat and steering. Wheels which were formerly inside the body are now outside to maximise the maximum angle for the steering wheel up to 45%. "We hope that with these changes, Semar can compete at its best and gain a prideful achievement for UGM," he concluded.
